Detailed review of the Edirol R-09HR

June 29, 2008 By Brad Linder 2 Comments

Neil Ewers of Blind Cool Tech has posted a new review of the Edirol R-09HR digital audio recorder. The R-09HR is the updated version of Edirol’s popular R-09, with support for higher quality audio. The R-09HR can handle resolutions up to 24-bit/96KHz, while the older version was limited to 48KHz and lower.

Ewers’s review is designed for the visually impaired, and so it’s pretty much 24 minutes of description in an MP3 format. And here’s the cool part of Ewers’s reviews. He records them on the devices he’s talking about. Last year he also posted an excellent review of the Zoom H2 flash audio recorder. This means you can get a good sense of how the recorder sounds. While most reviewers (myself included) typically post a few audio samples, this entire review is an audio sample. There are also segments of the podcast that give you an idea of how the mic sounds under different circumstances. For example, he compars the Edirol’s omnidirectional mics with the unidirectional mics on the Sony PCM-D50 by recording a truck moving down the street. With the Edirol R-09HR, it’s hard to tell which direction the truck is moving in, while the PCM-D50 does a great job of capturing stereo sound and letting you know that the mic is moving from right to left. The review’s a bit on the long side, but if you’re considering an Edirol R-09HR but haven’t quite made up your mind, you really should at least skim this podcast.
