April 1st: a dangerous time to blog

Brad Linder · Apr 1, 2007 · Leave a Comment

April Fool’s Day: It’s the best of times, and the worst of times for bloggers.

A significant portion of the blogging community is going to have a field day Sunday. If they had their druthers (what’s a druther anyway?) I think many bloggers would be writing great literature. Or at least slapstick comedy.

So they don’t pass up a good excuse to get a little creative. Michael Arrington wrote up a pretty lengthy post on TechCrunch today explaining that the blog had acquired FuckedCompany.com. While TechCrunch has generally focused on startups, FC has looked at companies on their way down. In a press release, Arrington explained that the merger would double the site’s traffic.

Of course, the whole thing was a joke. And a lot of people believed it.

As it turns out, I’m swamped with radio work this weekend. I went to Philly today to record some sound for a piece I’m working on, and I have to head back tomorrow. And then I have to transcribe all of that tape and whip it up into something coherent before I speak with my editor on Monday. So I’m not going to have much time to blog tomorrow.

And I’m glad. Because as fun as it is to read fake posts like Arrington’s, it’s a treacherous day to sit in front of a computer scanning blogs, press releases and other sources looking for news and information about software, digital video, and television to blog about. I guess that’s what retractions, updates, and “whoops, you got me” is for.

Of course, I’m not saying that I don’t have any funny posts set to run on any of my blogs tomorrow. But I’m not saying I do either.
