Ahh... yeah, I think I went with just nofollow on the about page because there are a lot of internal links.

While theoretically there's nothing wrong with internal links, I'm being overly cautious here. There's really not much reason to include follow links on them and they're links that show up on every single page of my site -- so it seems safer to add nofollow.

But long story short -- don't assume that *any* changes I made led to my recovery. It's just as likely that a Google algorithm change is what did it and my efforts went entirely unrewarded.

The best way to attract visitors is still to write content that people want to read.

Hi Brad,

Yes, I did read that article. :)

Good to see Liliputing has recovered fully. Was it hard work? I guess it was.

I do have a couple of WP sites -- one recovered, and the other one is struggling or, let's say, slowly dieing for various reasons. I was wondering about tags... and many other stuffs.

I'd appreciate if you can share YOUR thoughts on some of the common questions I have:

-- What you think about WP tags? Are they useless? Should we noindex, follow them or simply remove them?
-- What about About, Contact and other pages? Should they be unique... should we nofollow them?
-- How many older articles did you update/rewrite?
-- Do you recommend 301'ing articles?
-- What about category pages? Why noindex them?
-- Have you still noindexed posts lesser than 100 words? or did you delete them from the site?
-- What did you learn during the entire "recovery" process?

Like you said, we depend on Google, unfortunately. But let's not forget that it's much easier to gain readers/followers through Google than it is in the real world.

Oh, and it was through the TouchPad post I was able to find Liliputing! :)

I did actually publish another update in July, 2011:

http://www.bradlinder.net/2011/07/google-panda-23-and-recovery.html

Long story short, Google rolled out another update to Panda and either that or the changes I made… or both helped lead to a pretty full recovery.

The next month HP canceled the TouchPad tablet and traffic to Liliputing surged as people were looking for information about picking one up for $99 and installing Android on it.

We had more traffic in 2012 than any previous year and so far 2013 is off to a pretty good start.

Google still sends us most of our traffic, but we also have a growing number of readers coming from Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Reddit, and other sites.

Still, we're at the mercy of Google. At any time an algorithm change could easily cut our traffic (and revenue) in half… it's still Google's world, we're just living in it.

Hi Brad,

Great article. Love the updates! Unfortunate that Liliputing and other sites were hit.

I see you wrote this post in 2011. Can we have a new update? I just hope the site is back? Yes? Please update us.

Otherwise I can offer some useful suggestions. :)

Nope, that's due to a series of popular posts. Panda 2.3 was also a big factor in July.

I looked at Alexa data for your site. It indicates that you had a significant traffic increase around Aug 17. Is this accurate? My own site was affected. I believe Google is re-evaluating sites alphabetically. Daniweb recovered during the 3rd week of July, your site a little later. My site starts with a T, so I am anxiously waiting to be re-evaluated.

Thanks Tim. I'm holding off on writing a followup until I have a little more data, but it looks like things are finally starting to turn around. Search traffic isn't quite back to where it was before Panda, but for the first time in months it's on the rise instead of decline.

Of course, while Google drives a lot of traffic, it's the loyal readers that are the most important. Without loyal, regular readers interested in mobile computing news, trends, tips, and reviews, there's no way I could do what I do for a living.

Brad, I know what you're going through. I also have a tech website with original content (nothing copied). Sometimes I was linked by Engadget, Gizmodo and other big site, but that didn't help with Google's Panda update.

I want to let you know I've made all the changes you did since the end of February, and traffic hasn't recovered. I've submitted a reconsideration request and got the automatic response that there was no penalty in action, so on paper my site has fewer problems than Liliputing, but traffic is still down by 40-50% compared to where it was before Panda.

Great article btw, but we still don't know what's wrong with our websites, not matter how many articles about Panda we read.
