Fun with freelancing

Brad Linder · Oct 31, 2007 · 2 Comments

As of today, I’ve made more money in 2007 than I made during a year of work at my last full time job. Freelancing has been good to me.

Of course, this isn’t an apples to apples comparison. I did a little bit of freelance work on the side at my old job. I got paid vacation and medical insurance at that job. And honestly, I worked fewer hours.

But between blogging, public radio, some commercial audio production and some other odds and ends, I’ve managed to eke out a decent if not extravagant living, which is pretty exciting. Oh yeah, and the fact that I can get health insurance through my wife’s job helps. A lot.

OK, enough personal stuff for now. Stay tuned for more updates on field recorders soon.

Congratulations, Brad. What factors have you found to be the most important to successful freelancing?

Honestly, I have no idea. Probably the fact that I work too much. 🙂 You have to care about what you do, because there are some days when I wake up and don’t really feel like doing any work at all. But if I don’t work I don’t get paid, and once I get started blogging, or pitching radio stories or doing whatever it is that needs doing that day, I realize that there are far worse ways to make a paycheck.

That, and having a supportive spouse(with health insurance).
